And yet if bad modern noir can play like a parody, good noir still has the power to seduce. Yes, Lawrence Kasdan's “Body Heat” (1981) is aware of the films that inspired it--especially Billy Wilder's “Double Indemnity” (1944). But it has a power that transcends its sources. It exploits the personal style of its stars to insinuate itself; Kael is unfair to Turner, who in her debut role played a woman so sexually confident that we can believe her lover (William Hurt) could be dazed into doing almost anything for her. The moment we believe that, the movie stops being an exercise and starts working. (I think the moment occurs in the scene where she leads Hurt by her hand in that manner a man is least inclined to argue with.)
Subscribe to CLASSIC TRAILERS: to TRAILERS: to COMING SOON: us on FACEB. Body Heat: Directed by Lawrence Kasdan. With William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Richard Crenna, Ted Danson. In the midst of a searing Florida heat wave, a woman persuades her lover, a small-town lawyer, to murder her rich husband.
Women are rarely allowed to be bold and devious in the movies; most directors are men, and they see women as goals, prizes, enemies, lovers and friends, but rarely as protagonists. Turner's entrance in “Body Heat” announces that she is the film's center of power. It is a hot, humid night in Florida. Hurt, playing a cocky but lazy lawyer named Ned Racine, is strolling on a pier where an exhausted band is listlessly playing. He is behind the seated audience. We can see straight down the center aisle to the bandstand. All is dark and red and orange. Suddenly a woman in white stands up, turns around and walks straight toward him. This is Matty Walker. To see her is to need her.
Turner in her first movie role was an intriguing original. Slender, with hair down to her shoulders, she evoked aspects of Barbara Stanwyck and Lauren Bacall. But the voice, with its elusive hint of a Latin accent, was challenging. She had “angry eyes,” the critic David Thomson observed. And a slight overbite (later corrected, I think) gave a playful edge to her challenging dialogue (“You're not too smart, are you?” she says soon after meeting him. “I like that in a man.”)
Hurt had been in one movie before “Body Heat” (Ken Russell's “Altered States” in 1980). He was still unfamiliar: a tall, already balding, indolently handsome man with a certain lazy arrogance to his speech, as if amused by his own intelligence. “Body Heat” is a movie about a woman who gets a man to commit murder for her. It is important that the man not be a dummy; he needs to be smart enough to think of the plan himself. One of the brilliant touches of Kasdan's screenplay is the way he makes Ned Racine think he is the initiator of Matty Walker's plans.

A movie about adultery is a tough sell. And yet, Diane Lane’s angsty journey through her sexual relationship with a stranger (Oliver Martinez) makes it empathetic. It helps that Martinez is insanely attractive. Lane also broke some ground by bringing female sexuality to the limelight. She also proved herself to be a sex symbol. They both exude sexuality while furthering a very dramatic and gut-wrenching drama.

Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas are at the height of the sexual magnetism in this erotic thriller. It may involve questionable Cuban accents by Jolie and “Hung” star Thomas Jane, but the heat is palpable. Jolie has steamy scenes with both leads and this movie is definitely etched in memory for Jolie’s almost preternatural sex appeal. It helps that both Jane and Banderas aren’t half bad either. It may be naughty and disturbing at times but this movie is definitely memorable.
The Notebook
New Line Cinema via Everett Collection
This film may be tame by sex scene standards, but the rain scene between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams is so steamy that the film made Gosling the hottest man in America. The scene also brings a release to such an intense attraction between the two leads. This scene shows that you don’t need nudity or strong sexual situations to be sexy. It also shows how important sex can be in delivering a love story.

Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly will probably always be associated with this movie. Their love scene has become a part of movie history. Not only is it groundbreaking for being a frank portrayal of the love between two women but it also is just downright hot. Gershon’s ex-con and Tilly’s mobster wife have a scene so intense that it has made both actresses sex symbols to this day.
Risky Business
Warner Bros. via Everett Collection
This film’s “classic” status slightly undercuts how dark and sexual it is. To the casual observer it seems like a 1980s comedy, but it really is a sexual journey of a repressed teen (Tom Cruise) who falls for a prostitute (Rebecca De Mornay). This film captures the tension of wanting to lose your virginity and the inevitable journey into sex that happens afterward. It has also made an entire generation dance around in briefs and a dress shirt.
Brokeback Mountain
Focus Films via Everett Collection
This film was groundbreaking for exploring love between two men. It’s not riddled with gratuitous sex scenes and nudity, except maybe from Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams, but the scene between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal brings years of intensity to a boil. The heterosexual love scenes are hot too but seem to be more of a focus while most of the male scenes are intensified by being quick, stolen moments.

Blue Valentine

It’s not surprising Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are back on this list. Gosling oozes sexuality and Williams has an understated intensity that made this movie about a marriage both intense and believable. The film received a hefty rating and controversy for frankly portraying a man performing oral sex on a woman. This sex between the two leads feels so real….because the two actually dated.

It may be a little tough to imagine Kathleen Turner as a sex symbol now but there was a time where she channeled Lauren Bacall’s style and blended it with raw sexuality. In this drama, William Hurt gets lured into her bed…and her sordid web of crime and deceit. The two have a magnetism that is lost on fan’s of their more recent work. However, this film definitely has some of the sexiest moments in movie history.
Wild Things
Columbia Pictures via Everett Collection
This movie is a sexual buffet and a pretty fascinating take on the noir/heist movie genres. For a brief time, after this movie, Denise Richards was a major sex symbol. The film had some steamy love scenes between Richards and Matt Dillon and Neve Campbell. It also made all of America stop focusing on degrees of Kevin Bacon and more on the general amount of Kevin Bacon who made full-frontal movie history.

The love scene between Naomi Watts and Laura Harring took this psychological mindbender to a new and different place. It starts off somewhat innocently with a little kissing but reaches a crescendo of sexual intensity. Not only did the scene define the film but it also catapulted Naomi Watts to the A-list. Harring can best be remembered for the dirty dancing Amazonian princess in “The Forbidden Dance” or as a lesbian housewife in “Drool.”

Alfonso Cuarón will forever be synonymous for his Oscar win for gravity where Sandra Bullock gets screwed over by space. However, his first mainstream import is this pulse-raising, heart-thumping sexual coming of age tale. When Luisa (Maribel Verdú ) meets two teenage friends (Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal) the three become a free-wheeling “throuple.” The film is chock full of sex but it furthers the youthful exuberance of the teenagers and the resurgence of Luisa’s sexuality. The film ends in a threesome filled with emotion and strong subject matter.

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal are at the height everyone’s sexual interest when they made this romantic dramedy. The film has some of the conventions of a romcom but instead focuses on Gyllenhaal’s growth and Hathway’s mortality. It also helps with copious amounts of nudity of both sex symbols. The two actors may have faded out of the limelight but this film does help capture their heyday while also managing to turn you on in a film that’s genuinely entertaining and ironically isn’t focused on overt sexuality.

Chloe
Sony Pictures via Everett Collection
This film takes sexual obsession to a new place. Amanda Seyfried was not known much for overt sexuality but she becomes a sexually predatory ingénue in this film. Julianne Moore hires an escort, Chloe (Seyfried), to test her husband’s fidelity. Well Chloe gets a little obsessed. She manages to seduce an innocent Moore. Both women are able to capture sexuality without it feeling inauthentic or forced. Moore is also able to capture an understated yet intensely sexy energy that just feels like real life.
Closer
Columbia Pictures via Everett Collection
This film opts to focus more on the consequences of sexual intensity rather than the naughty bits. However, there is a lot of heat and energy just flying about. Natalie Portman plays a stripper with the power to enrapture men. Jude Law plays a serial cheater who confuses sex for love. Clive Owen plays a sexual wild man and Julia Roberts plays…Julia Roberts. The film opts for emotions over booty-grinding but there are some scenes including the Owen/Portman seduction scene that will burn their way into your memory.

There was a brief moment where tons of A-listers were making romantic comedies about friends with benefits. This film is the best. It captures the love, intimacy, fun, and hot sex of a relationship with a shockingly great acting performance by Justin Timberlake. Mila Kunis and Timberlake are not only hot but have an on-screen chemistry that makes this comedy…sexy.

Colin Farrell has done plenty of love scenes, full frontal scenes, and even a sex tape. However, the sex scene in this movie is the hottest. He and Matthew Davis are two Vietnam recruits. While on leave, they have sex and for a lack of space they do it in the same room. Why not? This scene helped establish Farrell as a sex symbol. It doesn’t hurt seeing the boyfriend from “Legally Blonde” naked either. The film is also genuinely well-acted and moving.
